The 7 Experiment in a Nutshell
“American life can be excessive, to say the least. And I was living it. In fact, all I wanted was more. Was there even such a thing as enough? My family finally decided that we wanted to do something about it, and that’s where 7 came in. SEVEN was an experiment. We decided that we were going to try – just try – to address 7 places in our lives where we were overdoing it: Food, Clothes, Possessions, Media, Waste, Spending, and Stress. Simply put – SEVEN changed our lives. I think it can change yours, too. Learn How to be Free” -Jen Hatmaker
My Experience of 7
I used this book as a challenge in my Facebook group Clutter Wars, along with my online buddy Kimberly Sutor of Grace and Sass: Women in Midlife. The challenges weren’t always easy, but boy were they eye-opening.
I cannot deny that I live a cushy existence in many respects. So this challenge was a way to take an honest look at where my life was out of balance. Rather than coming off as judgy, however, Jen’s amazing sense of humor made me feel understood. She is very open and honest about her own excesses. She divulges the sometimes crazy ways (always 7) each month that she and her family embark on this social experiment and spiritual journey. Various alternative “fasts” are also included so that each of us can design our own spiritual journey.
Not only did 7 help me clear some physical and mental clutter, it made me aware of the ways I can resist materialism and greed.
