Create a Healthy Morning Routine for Your Best Year Yet

Like the vast majority of Americans, I have an intention to be healthier this year. I will not use the dirty R word. Those never work for me because it seems like, well, work. No fun at all. Instead, I use a one word theme as a mantra of sorts. I come back to this word multiple times daily and it helps me make good decisions. This year’s word is Mindfulness. I plan to be mindful of 1) what I eat and drink 2) how I spend my time and 3) how I spend my money. I know this about myself: if I start out my morning in a healthy way, I’m MUCH more likely to be healthy the entire day. So this year I will create a healthy morning routine for my best year yet!

Wake Up and Drink a Cup of Detox Tea

I just feel a little disgusting after the holidays with all the treats and imbibing. Plus, I hope to find more natural ways to increase my energy. I love my morning coffee and will still have a cup, but, to be honest, it’s 1/3 creamer! My husband calls it “baby coffee.”

Why Detox tea? It removes toxins from the body. Basically, our bodies see bad food as toxic and thus build up fat cells around our organs to protect them. Detox tea helps remove the toxins from our bodies so these fat cells will shrink. In addition, detox tea helps fight inflammation and sugar cravings. There’s so much research on detox tea out there. One article I like is from The Fitnessista.

My Detox Tea Recipe

1 cup warm water (straight from the tap or the Keurig)

Juice of 1/2 half lemon

1/4 teaspoon Turmeric (mild tasting yet a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant)

1 teaspoon raw honey

I found this amazing lemon squeezer from Zulay which just makes the process so much simpler.

Other people add apple cider vinegar, cayenne or cinnamon to their tea.

Do a Few Yoga Stretches

I have a very messed up neck and a touchy back. I was in several car wrecks when I was younger. Plus, I’ve come to learn from my new BFF the chiropractor that I have a bit of scoliosis. I’ve decided that this year I don’t have to be in pain if I take the time to stretch and strengthen my back. I’m turning to yoga as part of my healthy morning routine. This article from Gaiam gives several basic poses that relieve back pain and strengthen your muscles.

If you don’t go to a gym or prefer to work out at home, check out YogaDownload.com. You can choose your favorite instructors and download (and keep forever) specific classes for specific goals. This site even has meditation and breathing classes.

Journaling Time

Consistent journaling is a big goal of mine to help me focus where I want to spend my time and as a way to focus on the inner me. I’ve always tried journaling at the end of the day and maybe that’s why I’ve never stuck with it!  I read a blog recently where the author mentioned doing mindset/journaling work in the morning as a way to set the tone for what she will create or achieve that day. LOVE IT! So now journaling is going to be part of my morning routine.

Two Household Tasks

If you have read my post “How to Schedule Your Week for Sanity (and use my Free Printable)” you’ll know that I do one load of laundry and one cleaning task each day. I start that load of laundry and complete my cleaning task first thing. I like to get them out of the way. Plus, I am not a morning person so I prefer to do my work and writing a little later in the day.

Smoothie Time

You may prefer to eat breakfast when you wake, but I get a little nauseous from food first thing in the morning. So I wait a bit until I have my smoothie. I prepare bags of smoothie ingredients in bulk so all I have to do is pull one out of the freezer and throw it in the Ninja. My current smoothie consists of:

I have to confess I just feel so super impressed with myself when I have my smoothie. I only eat a few kinds of veggies happily so this is a good way for me to get the good stuff in me.

Exercise

Exercise has definitely fallen by the wayside this holiday season. I have got to incorporate more movement into my life as part of my healthy morning routine. So I plan to take a class or at least take my greyhound Pippi for a long walk in the late morning. Because once I get sucked into work it can be hours before I lift my head from the computer. Wish me luck!

Prepare My Planned Lunch

I always plan my dinners for the week on Sunday. (Check out my first of 8 Meal Plan Monday posts for a week’s worth of meals planned out for you!) I think if I also plan out what I will be eating for lunch I will eat a much healthier meal.

Now It’s Your Turn

I’ve shared my healthy morning routine-a routine that supports my intention to be more mindful of what I eat and drink and how I spend my time. What are your intentions for the year? Better health? Increased productivity at work? Whatever your goals, craft a morning routine that will set you up for success. Doing the same few things every morning (i.e., creating a habit) will supercharge your day.

This sounds like a great way to bring some structure to my morning! It seems like the perfect mix of easing into my day and being productive first thing.

I’m working on getting up and moving/stretching in the morning, and staying off my phone.

Ah yes! Staying off the phone is a good one! I am trying to schedule when I check social media so I’m not checking all day long. Thanks for commenting!

This is a great post. I am a twenysomething and it’s complicated to take time in the morning to prepare myself for the day. I will need to try scheduling my morning a bit better so I can stay on top of things

Thank you Christina. If you work full time outside the home you may not have as much time in the morning as others, but I hope you find a few things to do to take care of YOU at the start of the day 🙂

I’m always way to hasty in the morning. I just rush everything. I love your post. Makes me think more about my habits!
